Differences between Additional Interest and Additional Insured in your Insurance Policies

When you purchase an insurance policy, there are times when you must name a third party who will also benefit in the event of a covered loss. Next, we present the difference between Additional Interest and Additional Insured, the reasons why you would have them and how you will see them reflected depending on the type of insurance policy you have.

What is Additional Interest? The Additional Interest in your insurance policy is a third person or organization who benefits from knowing that there is an active insurance policy, since it has a financial interest in what is being insured, and will be financially compensated in the event of a covered loss.

The Additional Interest is generally notified when there are changes in the policy such as cancellation, lapse in coverage, renewal of the policy or non-renewal of the policy. Including an Additional Interest in your insurance policy does not increase its cost since the Additional Interest does not have the rights to initiate claims under your coverage.

What is an Additional Insured? The Additional Insured is a third person or organization who is added by means of a clause or modification to the policy, and unlike the Additional Interest, add the Additional Insured if it has an extra cost since the Additional Insured acquires protection in your policy and right to initiate claims.

Examples of Additional Interest and Additional Insured

Auto Insurance: In your auto insurance, an Additional Interest is generally added when you finance your car. In your auto insurance, the Additional Interest is known as Lienholder, who does not need to initiate claims on your policy, but, in the event of a covered loss, they will receive payment.

In your auto insurance, the Additional Insured is who owns the vehicle. For example, if you make a rental contract, you are not the owner, then you must add the entity that rents the car to you, as Additional Insured.

Home Insurance: In your home insurance the lender (Mortgage Lender) can be added as Additional Interest. These entities have a financial interest in the house since they are the ones who give you the loan to pay it, so they must ensure that the property has the correct coverage and in case of covered loss, they will be compensated with payment.

If a property has multiple owners, in that case each owner must be named Additional Insured, since all must have the same rights to claim and be compensated in case of covered loss.

Rental Insurance: When you rent a property to live, the owner of this (Landlord) will ask you to be added as Additional Interest. This keeps them informed of any changes to the policy as they have a financial interest in the property and must ensure that you have adequate coverage.
