What is the difference between Certificate Holder and Additional Insured?

The terms Certificate Holder and Additional Insured are used mostly in commercial insurance policies in Georgia and South Carolina. A very frequent case is a General Contractor who, in order to offer a work contract to a subcontractor, will ask the subcontractor to appear as Additional Insured in his General Liability policy and will ask him to present a Certificate of Insurance (COI) where it appears as Certificate Holder. It is important to understand each of these requests and the difference when obtaining the employment contract.

What is Certificate Holder?

An insured will ask his insurance agent to issue a Certificate of Insurance (COI) in the name of the entity that is giving the work to the subcontractor. For example, a subcontractor issues a COI to the General Contractor. This certificate shows the General Contractor as Certificate Holder. What this means is that the General Contractor is the person or entity receiving the document. A COI is simply a proof of insurance at the current time the document is being presented. This certificate has general information about the coverage of the policy and does not modify in any way the terms of the existing policy. It is simply a way for the subcontractor to say "I have insurance."

What is Additional Insured?

In the construction industry, for example, part of the employment contract is that the coverage of the subcontractor's policy is extended to other entities. Any person or entity that benefits from this coverage is considered an Additional Insured. When someone like Additional Insured is added, this means that both the main insured and the Additional Insured have the same coverage under the same policy. This policy amendment protects the Additional Insured by allowing them to initiate a claim on the main insured's policy, in the event of being sued for work performed by the subcontractor.

Knowing these differences will make the process easier for you when obtaining an employment contract and for you to know what the terms and conditions are so that you can obtain it.
