What is an SR-22 and why might you need one?

An SR-22 is not auto insurance, but a Certificate of Financial Responsibility required by the state for drivers considered high risk.
This certificate is requested by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and is filed through an insurance company to prove that you carry at least the state-required minimum liability coverage, usually for three consecutive years.

The SR-22 allows your insurer to notify the state that your policy is active. If your policy is canceled or lapses due to non-payment, the DMV is immediately informed, which may result in license suspension.

What if You Don’t Own a Vehicle?

If you do not own a car, you can still meet SR-22 requirements by purchasing a Non-Owner Liability Policy, which covers you when driving vehicles you do not own.

⚠️ Failure to maintain an active SR-22 when required can lead to loss of driving privileges.

Who Needs an SR-22?

SR-22 filings are typically required after serious traffic violations, including:

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (DUI / DWI).
  • Driving without insurance as a vehicle owner.
  • Failure to pay damages from an at-fault accident.
  • Underage alcohol-related convictions.
  • Suspended or revoked driver’s license.
  • Accumulating excessive violation points.
  • Three or more violations within a 12-month period.

How Long Do You Need an SR-22?

Most drivers must keep an SR-22 on file for three years.
If your policy remains active and you avoid additional violations, the requirement will be removed once the period ends.
However, new violations or accidents may extend the SR-22 requirement and lead to another license suspension.
