Attention drivers in Georgia: beginning July 1, law HB 673, approved by former Governor Nathan Deal, goes into effect. This law aims to reduce traffic accidents caused by distracted driving due to improper use of electronic devices.
The law requires drivers to use hands-free technology when operating cell phones or electronic devices while driving.

🚫 What Is NOT Allowed
- Holding a cell phone, GPS device, tablet, media player, computer, or any electronic device while operating a vehicle.
- Writing, sending, or reading text messages, emails, or internet data while driving.
- Watching videos or movies unrelated to vehicle navigation (maps or GPS).
- Recording videos while driving.
✅ What IS Allowed
- Reporting a traffic accident, medical emergency, fire, crime, or hazardous road condition.
- Using your phone while legally parked (not stopped at a traffic light; legally parked means engine off or pulled over in a permitted area).
- Using phones or devices for navigation as long as they are mounted on the dashboard and operated hands-free.
⚠️ Penalties for Violations
Drivers who violate this law may face the following penalties:
• First offense: $50 fine and 1 point on the driver’s license.
• Second offense: $100 fine and 2 points.
• Third offense: $150 fine and 3 points.
The law allows a one-time warning pass for the first stop if the driver appears in court with proof of purchasing a hands-free device.
