What happens when my car is declared a total loss?

The term "Total Loss" in auto insurance is used when you have an accident and the cost of repairing your car is greater than the vehicle's current value. As a result, the car is not repaired by the insurance company, but rather the insurance company pays the current cost of the car (Actual Cash Value ACV) to the owner of the vehicle.

How is a car declared “Total Loss”?

When you have an accident and the other driver is at fault, their insurance will pay you the value of your car under their Liability coverage and based on their maximum limits. If, on the other hand, your car is affected by any covered damage, or you are hit by someone without coverage, the following coverages come into play to cover a car declared a total loss.

Coverage against All Risks (Comprehensive): Protects your car against events that are beyond your control. If your vehicle is declared a total loss due to fire, damage caused by covered natural disasters, or if you hit an animal, for example, your comprehensive coverage will pay the value of the vehicle, less the deductible for which you are responsible.

Collision Coverage: If your car is declared a total loss because it collides with another vehicle, your collision coverage will pay the value of the vehicle, less the deductible for which you are responsible.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage: Applies when an uninsured driver accident you and as a result, your car is declared a total loss. (Certain conditions or restrictions apply).

What happens when I am financing my car and it is declared a total loss?

If your car is affected by a covered accident, in this case, the insurance company makes the payment for the vehicle directly to the entity with which you are financing it (generally a financial entity or directly with the dealer). If at the time of the accident, the debt for your car is greater than the value of the vehicle (ACV), the insurance company will only pay the current value of the vehicle and you will be responsible for the difference. To avoid this, some insurance companies offer additional coverage called Gap Insurance. This coverage helps you cover the difference between what you owe on the vehicle and its current value.

Remember that each case is different and that is why it is important that you are properly advised.
