Do you know if you have to renew your Tax Id?

By the end of 2019, it is estimated that approximately 2 million Tax IDs will expire. The renewal of the Tax ID is a very important process for you to keep your taxes up to date and in order and avoid delays in your refund. The IRS has assigned different years for renewal depending on the numerical combination of the 2 digits in the middle of your full Tax ID number.

Who Should Renew?

Those taxpayers with a Tax ID number, whose middle digit is: 83, 84, 85, 86, and 87 (for example, 9NN-84-NNNN), must renew their Tax ID for tax preparation in the year 2020. The IRS will begin the process of notifying affected taxpayers in early summer 2019. It is very important to note that if you or someone you list on your tax return has a Tax ID number with half numbers in 83, 84, 85, 86, and/or 87, it means that they must renew their Tax ID as soon as possible and thus avoid delays in your refund.

Family Options

Taxpayers with half digits 83, 84, 85, 86, and/or 87, or even previously expired Tax ID numbers have the option to renew their Tax ID and their families at the same time. Those who have received the renewal letter from the IRS have the option to renew the Tax ID of their family members, even if they are not yet on the list to expire.

What do I need to renew my Tax ID?

To renew your Tax ID and that of your family members, you must fill out a W7 form for each of the Tax IDs that you are going to renew, and send original identification documentation (contact us for more information). For renewal, it is not necessary to submit a tax return.

Avoid common mistakes and delays in your taxes

If you file your taxes with your expired Tax ID, they may be processed by the IRS, but if you qualify for a credit, they may not give you a credit until the Tax ID has been renewed.
